Authentication uses OAuth in the browser with PKCE and dynamic client registration. No API key is needed; tokens are scoped to one vault and can be revoked from settings.

Setup steps

    Open the Claude connector link

    Use Claude on the web or Claude Desktop. This link opens Claude's custom connector dialog with the imem name and MCP URL already filled in:

    Review and add imem

    Confirm the dialog shows imem as the name and the hosted MCP URL. Click Add. The link only prefills the form; you still approve before anything is added.

    Manual fallback

    If the link does not open the dialog, go to Customize, then Connectors, click Add custom connector, and fill the form like this:

    Approve OAuth

    Claude opens a browser window pointing at imem. Sign in if asked and click Authorize. The window closes and the connector flips to connected. OAuth is the whole handshake — there is no API key to copy.

    Enable in a chat

    Start a new conversation. Click the connectors pill below the message input and toggle imem on. Claude can now read and write your vault.

Verify the connection

Paste the test prompt into a new Claude chat with the imem connector enabled. Claude should save and read back a harmless test memory, then tell you imem is ready.

Troubleshooting

  • The URL won't add — Claude needs the bare hostname, not a per-user URL. OAuth authorization is what binds it to your vault.
  • Claude can't find the tools — confirm the connectors pill shows imem as active for the current chat. New chats inherit your default, but old chats keep their original connector set.
  • You revoked by mistake — approve OAuth again and re-enable imem in the chat. Existing notes are untouched.
